Ladies and Gentlemen, Your 2009 World Series Champs

The New York Yankees accomplished an achievement Wednesday night that they have not done since 2000 against the New York Mets. What did they do? They became the 2009 World Series champsby defeating the Philadelphia Phillies. They took the series with a 4 and 2 record. The final game 6 was held where it began, at Yankee Stadium. Hideki Matsui was the World Series MVP with 6 Runs Batted In on a two run homerun, a double, and a single. The Yankees won the World Series at the opening of their old stadium in 1923, just as they did this year in their new stadium that opened this season. The recreation of watching Major League Baseball on t.v. or attending games has come to an end. However there are other highly wathed and attended sports underway such as NFL football, NBA basketball, and NHL hockey.

While this is the end of one recreational past time for Yankees fans, there is still one more chance to see the Yankees before spring training. Friday at 11 A.M. the Yankees will be on floats in a parade in New York City celebrating their victory with their fans lining the streets. There will be a dozen floats that the team will be riding on. After the parade there will be a ceremony at city hall for the 2009 MLB World Series Champions.

Championship Baseball

It is late October and what is the buzz currently about major league baseball? It's championship series time. While the postseason started off with eight teams it is now down to four and is closing in on the World Series. In the first round, which are best of 5 game series', the Yankees defeated the Twins with a 3-o record, the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals with a 3-0 record, the Angels defeated the Red Sox with a 3-0 record, and the Phillies defeated the Rockies with a 3-1 record.

The playoffs are currently at championship series stage, which are best of 7 game series', where the final two teams from the American League and the National League are playing for their league titles. For the American League the Yankees currently lead the series against the Angels 2-0. The Yanks are favored to be the winners of this series. As for the National League, the Phillies Lead the series over the Dodgers 2-1. The Phillies are favored to advance over the Dodgers. The winners of these two series will face off in the World Series which will be a best of a 7 game series.

Even though the Phillies are favored over the Dodgers, it would be interesting to see a Yankees Dodgers World Series. This would be because Joe Torre, the manager for the Dodgers, is the old Yankees manager who had been coaching them for 11 years and recently left at the end of the 2007 season.

Post Season and the Yankees

The post season of Major League Baseball is coming soon. There is a little less then a week of regular season game play left before playoffs begin as of today. There is still chances for many of the teams to make it into post season play, but for many teams their dream will be shattered and their season will end on October 4. At the end of the season there will be a total of eight teams that will advance into the exciting post season play. The teams that will advance are the American and National league winners of the East, Central, and West divisions and the teams with the most wins from the National and American leagues that did not win their division. One of those eight will be named champion of major league baseball by the beginning of November.

The New York Yankees are one of the teams people will be seeing in the playoffs. The Yankees won the East American league division on Sunday, September 27 when they beat their rivals the Boston Red Sox 4-2.While they still beat Boston, the Red Sox are not out of the playoffs. They beat the Toronto Blue Jays but needed the Texas Rangers to lose in order for them to secure the wild card spot, which happened. As a result the Yankees and Red Sox could be a good series to watch if these teams face again.

September call ups have occurred for the major league teams already. These call ups serve the purpose of increasing a teams roster and depth for playoffs. For the Yankees players from their minor league team the Scranton-Wilkesbar Yankees include Outfielder Shelly Duncan, Infielder Ramiro Pena, backup catcher Fransisco Cervelli, and pitchers Mark Melancon and Michael Dunn including several others. These players must be excited to be with the Yankees in the post season, especially because they did not make it last year. In fact these players on the current roster were present for something the Yankees had not done since 2006, and that Was winning the division.
